DEATH SENTENCE

WE’RE NO LONGER welcome in Desertville. It would be selfish to pretend my presence doesn’t affect the townspeople. I’m relieved to take my problems elsewhere, yet I’m guilty about leaving Vivian alone with the mess I’ve caused. Her emotions have been going haywire since Cadence broke the news to her. One minute she hides her face as tears prickle her eyes, then the next she’s grinning like a mad woman, throwing praises at Cadence for taking control of her life. If only we were certain of our destination—my bet is one with a low supernatural population.

The landline has been ringing nonstop ever since Cadence hung up on Drake. Vivian swears it’s unrelated to the events involving me, but she isn’t a very good liar. Her angry expression gives her away every time she slams the phone back into its receiver. The last phone call was the worst. I overheard Vivian yelling at the caller that we’d be gone by morning. I’ve never felt so rejected in my life. Being hated for reasons outside my control sucks the happiness right out of me. I better toughen up and get used to it.

I help Cadence pack her bag, teaching her the importance of necessities only for easy travel. Jeans are always a must—they last the longest in most unpleasant circumstances and look the cleanest if we’re unable to stop to do laundry, which occurs more often than I’d like to admit.

Tomorrow, Cadence’s job entails getting us out of town and then returning to finish off the last of the demons in her town. She wants to be certain of Vivian’s safety before leaving with us for good. She’s packing now for a quick, painless departure.

“I don’t think so.” I block Cadence from adding a miniskirt to her small pile of clothes.

“Come on! It’s my favorite.” She tries to toss it over my hand.

I snatch the skirt from her and throw it toward the closet. “It won’t be after your legs get gnawed off by razor-sharp teeth.”

“Fine,” she says, choosing a more appropriate pair of dark denim jeans.

“Better,” I say with a smile.

Cadence digs through her oak dresser and pulls out two pairs of leather gloves. She tosses me a pair for later. They’re rough and overused but will help me keep a better grip on the dagger she gave me.

I stuff them into the back pocket of my blue jeans and tug down my green sweater to conceal them.

“This is so surreal. I finally get to do something I want to do,” Cadence says. “I just wish I didn’t have to drop you off and turn around to come back.”

“It’ll only be for a week or so. Maybe we’ll have an apartment by then.”

She swings the small duffle bag over her shoulder, and I follow her outside to the Jaguar. She pops the trunk and thrusts the bag into it. It never hurts to load the car in advance. We need every last minute of sunlight to avoid the possibility of my demon popping in on us.
